F.A.Q.s

Q: What is Digital Monument Press, LLC?

Digital Monument Press—aka DM Press—publishes e-books that chronicle the making of video games, the personal accounts of the developers and studios that make them, and the practices, culture, and trends that drive the industry.

Q: What influenced the creation of DM Press?

As the video game industry continues to grow, an interest in how games are made and the people who make them grows in parallel. In response to that growth, we decided to write books to record those stories so that others could experience them. Each book extensively documents a studio's history and accomplishments, and the development of select games, told through a creative narrative wrapped around first-hand accounts given by that studio's developers.
That's the high-level view. The specific ingredients that make up our books are as follows:
  • Narrative: Each book's narrative recounts the twists and turns that resulted in studio formations and closures, ideas for games that influenced and innovated, and teams of talented people coming together—and breaking apart—to transform their biggest and boldest pie-in-the-sky ideas into (virtual) reality.

  • Developer Quotes: To form a bond between readers and stories, readers must become attached to characters. Our characters are real people, the trailblazers who contributed to video-game history. To help readers get to know these people better, our books include bountiful helpings of anecdotes, recollections, explanations, and commentary—all delivered straight from the developers responsible for a game's success.

  • Side Quests: Some readers are interested in a good story, others yearn for the particulars involved in game development. Each chapter includes several themed side panels, which we call side quests. Side quests delve into the nitty-gritty details of games, lifestyle, and culture related to the industry. Read them if you want, or skip them and move forward with the story.

  • Extended Reading: Behind every make-or-break decision lies a story. Trouble is, those stories often go on too long to allow for more than a few perspectives, or fail to fit within the context of a particular chapter. To prevent our narratives from becoming bloated, each chapter concludes with an optional extended reading section that goes more in-depth on topics covered in that particular chapter. Read these sections if you want, or jump ahead to the next chapter to press on with the story.

  • Assets: Candid shots, concept art, original design documents, heat-of-the-moment chicken scratch that blossomed into core mechanics or failed to make the cut... Provided we can legally include them, these assets and more decorate the pages of our books.
Our format's elements come together to form a monument to the individuals, studios, and games that influenced video-game history.

Q: What is DM Press's target demographic?

Q: Does DM Press only publish books about bonafide "classics" and the studios that made them?

Not necessarily. Some books explore the entire history of a studio and the games it developed and produced. Others cover specific aspects of video game and development culture, or a collection of games of the same genre (some of which might be classics, some of which you might never have heard of), or a particular facet of the industry. In essence, we are committed to documenting everything video games, not just the games themselves.
